How WE work with storm damage

Case 1: Wind Damage on Shingle Roof

When inspecting a roof for wind damage, the inspector typically looks for telltale signs of wear and tear caused by strong winds. During the inspection of a shingle roof, the inspector identified visible wind damage, which can often manifest in several ways:

Shingle Tab Dislodged

High winds can wreak havoc on shingle roofs, leading to many issues that, if left unaddressed, can result in costly repairs or even roof replacement. Wind can loosen shingles, causing them to lift or completely detach from the roof. When this happens, the exposed underlayment and decking are vulnerable to water infiltration, leading to leaks and potential structural damage.

Wind Creased Shingles

Wind can lift shingles from the edges, which compromises the roof’s ability to provide a waterproof seal.

The protective granules on the shingle surface, which guard against UV rays and weathering, can also become dislodged when the shingle is bent, further weakening the roof’s defense system.

Missing or Dislodged Shingles

Missing or dislodged shingles are one of the most noticeable and common signs of wind damage. Strong winds can easily loosen shingles, causing them to fall off or shift out of place, exposing the underlying roof materials. If left unrepaired, this can lead to water infiltration, leaks, and further structural damage to the roof. It’s essential to address these issues promptly to maintain the integrity of your home.

Lifting tabs

Lifting shingle tabs occur when wind gets underneath the edges of the shingles, causing them to lift from the roof surface. Although the shingles may not be fully dislodged, lifted tabs weaken the roof’s defense against water infiltration and future wind damage. If left unaddressed, these lifted shingles can lead to leaks and may eventually tear away completely, requiring more extensive repairs. Early detection and repair of lifting tabs can help prevent more significant damage and prolong the life of your roof.

Missing shingle tabs

Missing shingle tabs are a clear indicator of roof damage, often caused by strong winds or severe weather. When tabs are missing, the underlying layers of your roof are exposed to the elements, increasing the risk of leaks, water damage, and deterioration of the roof’s structure. Addressing missing shingle tabs promptly can help prevent costly repairs and ensure that your roof remains durable and watertight.

Solution

After identifying extensive wind damage, we worked with the homeowner’s insurance company to provide thorough documentation and support for a roof replacement. By assisting with the claims process and coordinating with the insurance adjuster, we successfully secured approval for a new roof, minimizing the homeowner’s out-of-pocket costs.

Step 1: Tear existing roof off

The first step in the roof replacement process is tearing off the existing damaged roof. Our team carefully removes all shingles, underlayment, and any compromised materials down to the roof decking. This ensures a clean and solid foundation for the new roof installation, preventing future issues caused by lingering damage or deterioration.

Step 2: Dry in roof

After inspecting the roof decking, the next step is installing an ice and water shield in vulnerable areas such as valleys, eaves, and around roof penetrations like chimneys or vents. This self-adhering waterproof membrane provides extra protection against water infiltration, especially during heavy rains or snow.

Following this, the roof is fully dried-in by laying down a moisture-resistant underlayment over the entire roof surface. This combination ensures that the roof is fully protected from leaks, creating a solid barrier until the final shingles are installed.

Step 3: Reshingle roof

In this step, we begin by installing the metal valley to ensure proper water drainage and enhance the durability of the roof. Next, we proceed with laying down the new shingles, ensuring a precise and secure fit across the entire roof surface. As part of the re-shingling process, we also install new vents to improve roof ventilation and extend its lifespan.

Finally, to achieve a seamless and polished appearance, the vents are painted to match the roof color, ensuring they blend in with the overall aesthetic of the home. This step not only enhances the roof’s functionality but also contributes to a clean, uniform look.

Case 2: Severe Wind/Hail Damage

Severe wind and hail caused significant damage to the roof, with shingles being lifted and cracked, and soft metal components dented. We worked with the homeowner’s insurance company, providing detailed documentation to support the claim. The insurance approved a full roof replacement, covering most of the costs and allowing for quick restoration of the property.

Severe wind damages to houses facade

Severe wind can cause significant damage to a house’s facade, affecting siding, windows, and external structural elements. Strong gusts can dislodge or crack siding, creating gaps that allow water to infiltrate and damage the underlying structure.

Tree fell over due to wind

High winds can cause trees to uproot or snap, leading to significant damage to homes and property. When a tree is knocked over by strong winds, it can crash into roofs, walls, or windows, causing structural damage and potential safety hazards.

Wind lifted shingles

Wind-lifted shingles occur when strong gusts of wind get underneath the shingles, causing them to lift from the roof’s surface. This lifting breaks the adhesive seal between the shingles and the underlayment, making the roof vulnerable to water infiltration, leaks, and further damage during future storms.

Areas of wind lifted shingles

If not addressed promptly, lifted shingles can tear off completely, exposing the roof decking and leading to more significant structural issues. Timely repair or re-sealing of the lifted shingles is crucial to maintaining the integrity and weatherproofing of the roof.

Hail Damage Shingles Overview

Prompt inspection and repair after a hailstorm are critical to maintaining the integrity of the roof and preventing long-term damage.

Hail damage

During a routine inspection following a hailstorm, significant damage was discovered on the shingle roof of a residential property. The hail had caused extensive cracking and denting of the shingles, which left the roof vulnerable to water infiltration and potential long-term damage.

Soft metal damage

We identified significant damage to the soft metal components of the roof, including gutters, flashing, and vents. Hailstones had left visible dents and punctures in these metal surfaces, which can weaken their functionality and appearance.

Noticeable hail strikes

TV dishes are the first place to check for sign of hail in the area.

Solution: Roof Replacement

Step 1: Shingle roof torn off

The first step in the roof replacement process is to tear off the existing shingle roof. This involves carefully removing all the old shingles, underlayment, and any damaged or worn-out roofing materials.

Step 2: Rotted decking replacement

After tearing off the old shingles, the next step is to inspect the roof decking for signs of rot or damage. If any areas of the decking are found to be compromised, they are torn apart and replaced with new, sturdy materials. Replacing the rotted decking is crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of the roof and ensuring a solid foundation for the new shingles.

Step 3: Ice and Water plus underlayment

Once the roof decking is secure and any necessary repairs are made, we install an ice and water shield in vulnerable areas, such as valleys, around chimneys, and at the eaves. This self-adhesive waterproof membrane offers extra protection against water infiltration, especially during heavy rains or snow.

Next, we cover the entire roof with a high-quality underlayment, creating an additional moisture barrier between the roof decking and the shingles.

Step 4: Shingle installed with ridge vent

With the underlayment in place, we proceed to install the new shingles, ensuring they are securely fastened to withstand future weather conditions. As part of this process, we also install a ridge vent along the roof’s peak. The ridge vent allows for proper ventilation, helping to regulate attic temperatures and extend the lifespan of the roof. This combination of new shingles and ridge vent ensures the roof is both durable and energy-efficient, providing long-term protection for your home.

Case 3: Wind/Hail Damage on Shingle Roof

In this case, high winds caused significant damage to sections of the roof’s edge metal, leaving the roof’s perimeter vulnerable to further damage. Additionally, the strong winds shattered a window, creating an immediate need for repairs. We worked with the homeowner’s insurance company to restore the home to its original condition with minimal out-of-pocket costs.

Edge metal lifted by wind

High winds caused the edge metal of the roof to lift, exposing the roof’s edges to potential damage.

Broken window

Strong winds during a severe storm caused debris to strike and shatter a window. The force of the wind pushed loose objects into the glass, leading to the breakage.

Hail damage on whirley bird and shingles

A recent hailstorm caused significant damage to both the whirlybird vent and shingles on the roof. The hail dented and cracked the shingles, weakening their protective function, while the whirlybird vent sustained visible dents and reduced functionality.

Soft metals hail damaged

During the inspection, noticeable soft metal damage was found on components like gutters, flashing, and vent covers. The hail and wind had caused dents and punctures, compromising their functionality.

Solution

After identifying extensive wind and hail damage, we worked with the homeowner’s insurance company to provide thorough documentation and support for a roof replacement. By assisting with the claims process and coordinating with the insurance adjuster, we successfully secured approval for a new roof, minimizing the homeowner’s out-of-pocket costs.

Step 1: Roof torn off and decking replaced

The first step in the roof replacement process is tearing off the old, damaged shingles and underlayment. Once the roof is stripped down to the decking, we inspect it for any signs of rot or damage. Any compromised sections of the decking are then removed and replaced with new, sturdy material to ensure a solid foundation for the new roof. This crucial step guarantees the long-term integrity of the roof and prevents future issues.

Step 2: Dry in roof

After the decking is replaced, the next step is to dry in the roof by installing a moisture-resistant underlayment. This layer protects the roof by preventing water from penetrating the decking, ensuring the roof remains watertight until the shingles are installed. This critical step provides a protective barrier against potential leaks during the roofing process.

Step 3: Reshingle roof

In this step, new shingles are carefully installed across the entire roof, ensuring a secure fit and proper alignment. This restores the roof’s protection and durability, ready to withstand future weather conditions.
