Wind Damage vs Hail Damage

Storms damage a roof in two distinct ways. Knowing which you are dealing with guides both the repair and the insurance claim.

Wind Damage

Uplift and displacement from high winds

  • Lifted, creased, or missing shingles where the wind broke the seal
  • Torn or peeled-back sections along the roof edge
  • Displaced or bent edge metal and drip edge
  • Exposed underlayment and nail lines where shingles blew off
Hail Damage

Impact bruising from hailstones

  • Round bruises and dark impact marks on the shingle surface
  • Granule loss that collects in gutters and downspouts
  • Cracked or fractured shingles and splitting
  • Dented metal vents, flashing, and roof accessories

Signs of Storm Damage

After a storm, look for these signs from the ground. A licensed inspector can confirm and document the full extent safely.

Wind-lifted and creased asphalt shingles on a roof after a storm

Missing or lifted shingles

Wind can break the seal and lift, crease, or blow off shingles, exposing the underlayment beneath.

Asphalt granules washed into a gutter after a hailstorm indicating shingle impact

Granules in the gutters

Piles of loose asphalt granules in gutters or downspouts often follow a hailstorm and signal surface impact.

Dented metal roof vent and flashing from hail impact

Dented vents and flashing

Dented metal vent caps, flashing, and accessories are a telltale sign of hail impact on the roof.

Bruised shingles

Round bruises and dark impact marks where hail knocked granules away weaken the shingle over time.

Scattered shingle debris and a downed branch on a roof after a storm

Storm debris on the roof

Scattered shingle debris or downed branches can indicate impact damage that needs a closer look.

Leaks after the storm

A new water stain or drip after a storm points to compromised shingles, flashing, or decking above.

How Much Does Storm Damage Roof Repair Cost?

Storm repair cost depends on the extent of wind or hail damage, the roof material, and access. Most storm damage repair is handled through a homeowners insurance claim, so your out-of-pocket cost is often limited to your deductible.

Minor Wind / Shingle
$800-$1,500
A few lifted or blown-off shingles and minor edge-metal or flashing resealing.
Moderate Multi-Area
$1,500-$7,500
Wind or hail damage across several sections, valley or vent repairs, and partial shingle replacement.
Major Structural / Insurance
$7,500-$55,000+
Widespread damage, structural repairs, or full-section replacement, most often handled through an insurance claim.

Storm Damage Repair: Frequently Asked Questions

Will homeowners insurance pay for roof damage?

It depends on the cause. Most homeowners policies cover sudden, accidental storm damage from wind and hail. They generally do not cover damage from ordinary wear, age, or deferred maintenance. Whether a specific claim is approved is your carrier's decision. We document the storm damage thoroughly so your claim is well supported, but we cannot guarantee approval.

At what wind speed will a roof come off?

There is no single threshold. Most asphalt shingles are rated to withstand winds of roughly 60 to 130 mph depending on the product and how they were installed, but older, worn, or poorly sealed shingles can lift at much lower speeds. Gusts, roof edges, and existing wear all raise the risk, which is why we recommend an inspection after any significant wind event.

How do you handle the insurance adjuster?

We meet or coordinate with your adjuster, walk the roof with them where possible, and present our photo documentation and a written estimate built in the Xactimate and Symbility platforms that insurers use. Our role is to document the damage accurately and communicate the true scope of repair. Answer your adjuster honestly and stick to the facts; we handle the technical roofing details on your behalf.

What is the 25% rule for roofing?

The 25 percent rule refers to building-code provisions in some areas that require a roof to be brought up to current code, sometimes meaning full replacement, once repairs affect more than 25 percent of the roof within a set period. It is a code and jurisdiction matter, not an insurance guarantee, and how it applies varies by location. Our inspector can explain whether it may affect your project.

Do you require a deposit for storm repairs?

No. Roof Doctors does not require an advance deposit. You pay after the work is completed to your satisfaction, which for insurance work is typically coordinated around your claim and deductible.

What warranty comes with a storm repair?

Every storm repair includes a 1-year workmanship warranty on our installation. An optional 2-year roof leak certification is also available, and GAF Silver Pledge manufacturer coverage applies to full roof replacements.

How can I tell wind damage from hail damage?

Wind damage usually shows as lifted, creased, or missing shingles and displaced edge metal, often along the roof edges. Hail damage shows as round bruises and dark impact marks on the shingle surface, granule loss into the gutters, and dented vents and flashing. Our inspector confirms which type you have and documents it for the claim.
